Why develop a wellness program?

In 2020, 12% of officers reported a prior diagnosis of mental illness and 26% screened positive for depression, anxiety, PTSD, or suicidal ideation or self-harm symptoms.

A mental health diagnosis was particularly high among:

  • Female officers

  • Officers who were divorced, widowed, or separated

  • Officers with military experience.

Barriers for first responders in accessing mental health services include:

  • Inability to identify when they are experiencing a mental illness

  • Concerns about confidentiality

  • Belief that psychologists cannot relate to them

  • Stigma that officers who seek mental health services are not fit for duty
